![]() Ernst Zinner with the IMS 3f ion microprobe, which was installed in the Laboratory for Space Sciences in 1982, shortly after its installation. This instrument played and is still playing an important role in the scientific research of the laboratory. Now we also have a second type of ion microprobe, the NanoSIMS.
Participant in the 3rd Washington and Clemson University Workshop on Isotopic Anomalies and Presolar Grains that took place on November 14-15, 1992 at Clemson University. The WU participants drove to Clemson in a van. This has been done twice again in 1995 and 1998 and will again be done for the upcoming meeting on November 11-12, 2000. Outside participants in the 1992 meeting included Roberto Gallino from the University of Torino (4th from left in front row), Mike Howard from the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (4th from right in front row) and Roy Lewis from the University of Chicago (2nd from right).
Ernst Zinner pointing to the Stardust sign encountered on the drive back from the 1992 WU-Clemson Workshop. Good to know that other people also care about stardust but the real stuff is found in our laboratory where its study provides information about properties of the stars.
![]() The Washington University extraterrestrial materials family. This photograph was taken 1993 at the 56th Meteoritical Society in Vail Colorado. At that meeting Bob Walker was awarded the Leonard medal of the Meteoritical Society. The group in the picture includes past and present members of the Laboratory for Space Sciences and the Earth and Planetary Science Department as well as national and international visitors to the Laboratory. First row (from left): Joyce Brannon, Marilyn Lindstrom (formerly EPSD, now NASA Houston), Ghislaine Crozaz, Tim Swindle (PhD 1986, see Alumni page). Second row: Scott Messenger, Brigitte Wopenka, Peter Hoppe (posdoc 1991-92, now Max-Planck-Institute Mainz, Germany), Walburga Beckerling (Univ. of Münster, Germany), Meenakshi Wadhwa (PhD 1994), Sachiko Amari, Bob Walker, Don Burnett (Caltech), Ahmed El Goresy (Max-Planck-Institute Mainz, Germany), Frank Podosek, Minoru Ozima (Univ. of Tokyo), George Flynn (PhD 1982). Third row: David Lindstom (formerly EPSD, now NASA Houston), ??, Bob Brazzle (PhD 1996), Karl Kehm (PhD 2000), Conel Alexander (postdoc 1989-1994, now at DTM, Washington).

This workshop was one in the series of workshops between Washington and Clemson University but was a larger interdisciplinary conference including participants from many different fields: observational astronomers, nuclear astrophysicists, and cosmochemists.
